Practical Suggestion:
Singing the ‘Lord have mercy’
The Kyrie or Lord, have mercy ‘is ordinary done by alo, that is, by the people and the choir or cantor having a part in it.’ (General Instruction of the Roman Missal 52). There are many settings of this piece (including Gregorian Chant) which have a very simple response for the people, and this is a simple way of encouraging congregational singing. There are also more elaborate choral settings for choir only which, if we follow the spirit of the instruction, would be more rarely used. It is sometimes possible, particularly with Gregorian chant settings, to have a combination of cantor, people and choir, as follows: (i) cantor sings ‘Kyrie’ or ‘Christe’, (ii) people repeat what they have heard (iii) a third repetition is sung by the choir, with harmonies or polyphony.
